The shelter makes it's own yummy guinea pig food which is available in three types and four sizes -
1.5kg - $10.00 2.5kg - $15.00 4kg - $23.00 7kg - $36.00 ADULT FOOD: Our adult food is completely lucerne free as a diet high in lucerne is considered unhealthy for guinea pigs over 12 months of age. Lucerne (alfalfa) is very high in calcium and if fed to guinea pigs on a regular basis can cause bladder stones which is a very painful condition and if left untreated can result in the death of your beloved guinea pig. The majority of mixes sold by pet shops and produce stores are based on lucerne and most also contain seeds, artificially coloured and flavoured "fruit and vegie pieces" and numerous other ingredients which are considered unhealthy for guinea pigs. TRANSITION FOOD: We've reduced the amount of lucerne in our Transition Food to make the change to a non-lucerne diet a gentle one as piggies move towards eight months of age. Transition Food can be fed from eight to twelve months when it is advisable to change to Adult Food. Also good for piggies who have been fed commercial mixes all their lives as most of these are made from lucerne and whilst most piggies prefer our shelter food from the outset, some don't like change and new food needs to be introduced gradually. YOUNG GUINEA PIG FOOD: For guinea pigs up to eight months of age, and gestating and lactating mums. This is an 80% lucerne/20% wheaten blend with the calcium content in this case being needed to help build strong healthy bones. HAY: $15 and $30 bags Our hay is delivered to us on a regular basis. It arrives in bales and we bag it fresh almost every day. As hay is seasonal we have no control over what is available but generally grassy is available from January through to August when it goes out of season and is replaced by barley and oaten. Grassy comes in several different types eg Rhodes Grass, Meadow, Pasture. The quality will vary but we always try and source the very best available. We only ever purchase hay which we think is good enough to feed both our shelter piggies and yours! If, like us, you use hay for bedding, the best bedding hay is grassy. Whilst barley and oaten can also be used, being a wider leaf they tend to absorb urine and become smelly in a short period of time. They also flatten more quickly than grassy which retains it’s “fluff” from one cage clean to the next (as long as you’re generous with the hay, and clean at least once a week).
